　　由拉乌尔·沃尔什自己的经典黑色电影《夜困摩天岭》(High Sierra，1941)翻拍而成的西部片，一名年迈的惯犯计划了一次火车劫案，为了找一个可靠的执行人，他花钱从监狱里救出了一名死刑犯--韦斯 麦昆。麦昆原来准备结婚并安定下来，但他的未婚妻在他入狱时病故了，心灰意冷的他又走上了犯罪的老路，却又与另外俩名女士纠缠在一起，让他再生金盆洗手之意，可是打劫计划涉及的一干人等却各怀鬼胎，各有所图，甚至有人为了赏金将计划通报给警长，虽然麦昆临机应变，逃脱了警长布下的陷阱，但为了抢夺赃款，他还是中了枪，并为自己心仪的女士背叛，只身一人被警长的人马困在了山里，然而警长还在盘算更阴险的计划对付他。
