简　　介
　　心理学博士玛格丽特·麦瑟森（西格妮·韦弗 Sigourney Weaver 饰）擅长用科学的手段分析各种难以解释的超自然现象，对于所谓的超能力更是充满质疑。在助手汤姆·巴克利（希里安·墨菲 Cillian Murphy 饰）的协助下，她们深入乡间，戳穿了一个又一个“灵媒”的骗局。与此同时，曾经在20世纪60~70年代引起轰动的超能力者西蒙·希尔沃（罗伯特·德·尼罗 Robert De Niro 饰）强势复出，引起新一波的热潮。玛格丽特曾让西蒙的弟子的原形毕露，可她始终回避与西蒙的正面对决。一些人的推波助澜似乎要将他们的对决变成可能，但玛格丽特却突然去世。
