　　桑顿是重量级拳王，因致命一击打死对手，从此退出拳坛，由美国返回故乡爱尔兰，隐居家乡间不问世事，返乡途中遇到玛丽惊为天人，被车夫麦克林调侃是口渴所产生的幻影。玛丽暗中帮桑顿打扫祖产，借此表情，桑顿托麦克林作媒，玛丽的哥哥威尔却多加阻挠，幸赖隆纳根神父和普雷佛牧师帮助才得以成亲。威尔喜欢提兰寡妇，故让玛丽出嫁，险谋被识破后恼羞成怒，只给玛丽一点点嫁妆。爱尔兰民风保守，玛丽认为扣留嫁妆是对丈夫的侮辱，经常抱怨要求取回，但桑顿无意争夺名利，玛利认为丈夫是个懦夫，怕村人取笑想逃离家乡，桑顿把她拖回娘家，并与威尔大打出手，一场恶斗威尔被打得口服心服，玛丽才知丈夫不是懦夫，尽释前嫌和好如初……
